Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of motivation on job satisfaction and organizational performance in the context of container shipping companies in Taiwan. Four motivation dimensions were identified based on an exploratory factor analysis, including remuneration, job achievement, job security and job environment. In addition, five job satisfaction dimensions were identified, namely: job policy, job autonomy, job workload, job performance and job status. Organizational performance dimensions included financial and non-financial performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Factor analysis was used to summarize a large number of motivation, job satisfaction and organizational performance attributes to identify the crucial factors. Reliability tests based on Cronbach’s alpha and corrected item-total correlation coefficients was used to test the internal consistency of questionnaire responses. ANOVA tests were subsequently used to test for differences in respondents’ perception of these factors according to selected demographics. Finally, a multiple regression model analysis was conducted to examine the relationships between motivation, job satisfaction and organizational performance.

Findings

Results indicated that remuneration and job performance had a positive effect on financial performance dimensions such as return on assets, turnover growth rate and profitability while job environment and job autonomy had a positive effect on non-financial performance dimensions, such as customer service, employee productivity and service quality.

Originality/value

This study has drawn attention to the importance of the relationships between motivation, job satisfaction and organizational performance in the container shipping context. The findings have significant implications for researchers and shipping practitioners. Despite the existence of research on the inter-relationships between motivation, job satisfaction and organizational performance in other disciplines, no empirical study was discussed in previous shipping or transportation-related research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify the critical success factors to international ship finance centre (ISFC) and to understand the reasons behind ship financing decision by shipowners and their views on the potential of Shanghai to become an ISFC in the near future.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey questionnaire and follow-up interviews were conducted. The survey of this study was conducted by firstly sending online questionnaire with interview questions via email and then carrying out interview either on telephone or in-person with the interview questions to collect factual data and views from individual interviewees.

Findings

This study identified governmental support and stable policy, sound and favourable legal system, advanced maritime cluster and dynamic source of finance as critical success factors which can help Shanghai to evolve into an international maritime centre with dual function as an ISFC which is a synthesis with the maritime sector of an international finance centre.

Originality/value

This paper is known to be the first to link international maritime centre with ISFC.

Abstract

Purpose

To review conceptual links between research on personal epistemological beliefs and leadership behaviours associated with the transformational‐transactional leadership model.

Design/methodology/approach

Transformational leaders act as facilitators of learning in organisations, and therefore their beliefs, cognitions and behaviours can be explored in the same manner as teachers in classroom settings. Research on both personal epistemological beliefs and the transformational‐transactional leadership model is reviewed and key conceptual links are identified in the areas of underlying beliefs, metacognition and cognition, and implications for training.

Findings

The literature review suggests that strong conceptual links exist between mature personal epistemology and beliefs and behaviours associated with transformational leadership. Similarly, conceptual links exist between less mature personal epistemology and beliefs and behaviours associated with transactional leadership.

Research limitations/implications

This is a conceptual paper that will require further empirical investigation. However, studies of the personal epistemology of leaders may provide insights into their behaviours and beliefs associated with transformational and transactional leadership.

Practical implications

Research indicates that personal epistemology can be affected through appropriate interventions. Thus, training programmes designed to facilitate adoption of transformation leadership behaviours could be informed by such research.

Originality/value

This paper is original in its conceptualisations of beliefs potentially underpinning transformational leadership. It offers a new line of inquiry for further research into transformational leadership behaviours and ways that such behaviours can be influenced through metacognitive and cognitive interventions.

Abstract

Purpose

Cantilever plates subject to axial flow can lose stability by flutter and properties such as viscoelasticity and laminar friction affect dynamic stability. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the dynamic stability of viscoelastic cantilever plates subject to axial flow by using the differential quadrature method.

Design/methodology/approach

Equation of motion of the viscoelastic plate is derived by implementing Kelvin-Voigt model of viscoelasticity and applying inverse Laplace transformation. The differential quadrature method is employed to discretize the equation of motion and the boundary conditions leading to a generalized eigenvalue problem. The solution is verified using the existing results in the literature and numerical results are given for critical flow velocities

Findings

It is observed that higher aspect ratios lead to imaginary part of third frequency becoming negative and causing single-mode flutter instability. It was found that flutter instability does not occur at low aspect ratios. Moreover the friction coefficient is found to affect the magnitude of critical flow velocity, however, its effect on the stability behaviour is minor.

Originality/value

The effects of various problem parameters on the dynamic stability of a viscoelastic plate subject to axial flow were established. It was shown that laminar friction coefficient of the flowing fluid increases the critical fluid velocity and higher aspect ratios lead to single-mode flutter instability. The effect of increasing damping of viscoelastic material on the flutter instability was quantified and it was found that increasing viscoelasticity can lead to divergence instability.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a social semiotic approach to analysing objects of learning in terms of their critical aspects.

Design/methodology/approach

The design for this paper focuses on how the semiotic resources – including language, equations, and diagrams – that are commonly used in physics teaching realise the critical aspects of a common physics object of learning. A social semiotic approach to the analysis of a canonical text extract from optics is presented to illustrate how critical aspects can be identified.

Findings

Implications for university teaching and learning of physics stemming from this social semiotic approach are suggested.

Originality/value

Hitherto under-explored similarities between the Variation Theory of Learning, which underpins learning studies, and a social semiotic approach to meaning-making are identified. These similarities are used to propose a new, potentially very powerful approach to identifying critical aspects of objects of learning.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to design a wearable medical device as a human care platform and to introduce the design details, key technologies and practical implementation methods of the system.

Design/methodology/approach

A multi-channel data acquisition scheme based on PCI-E (rapid interconnection of peripheral components) was proposed. The flexible biosensor is integrated with the flexible data acquisition card with monitoring capability, and the embedded (device that can operate independently) chip STM32F103VET6 is used to realize the simultaneous processing of multi-channel human health parameters. The human health parameters were transferred to the upper computer LabVIEW by intelligent clothing through USB or wireless Bluetooth to complete the transmission and processing of clinical data, which facilitates the analysis of medical data.

Findings

The smart clothing provides a mobile medical cloud platform for wearable medical through cloud computing, which can continuously monitor the body's wrist movement, body temperature and perspiration for 24 h. The result shows that each channel is completely accurate to the top computer display, which can meet the expected requirements, and the wearable instant care system can be applied to healthcare.

Originality/value

The smart clothing in this study is based on the monitoring and diagnosis of textiles, and the electronic communication devices can cooperate and interact to form a wearable textile system that provides medical monitoring and prevention services to individuals in the fastest and most accurate way. Each channel of the system is precisely matched to the display screen of the host computer and meets the expected requirements. As a real-time human health protection platform technology, continuous monitoring of human vital signs can complete the application of human motion detection, medical health monitoring and human–computer interaction. Ultimately, such an intelligent garment will become an integral part of our everyday clothing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the mechanical property of three-dimensional (3D) Printed photopolymer (Vero Yellow and Tango Black) with different constant strain rate. According to the experimental results, three constitutive models are used to describe the stress-strain and stress-time relation in the tension and stress relaxation process.

Design/methodology/approach

The Stratasys Objet 260 was used to prepare the four groups of samples with different photopolymers (Vero Yellow and Tango Black). The stress-strain and stress-time relations are obtained by the uniaxial tensile tests and relaxation tests performed at room temperature with different constant strain rates. The generalized Kelvin model (GKM), standard linearized model (SLM) and fractional order model (FOM) are used to describe experimental data by means of the curve-fitting approach.

Findings

Experimental results show that the tension stress increases faster at a higher strain-rate for tensile tests. Relaxation stress is influenced by the preload strain-rate for relaxation tests. For the theoretical fitting, the error comparison between three constitutive models and experimental data are calculated to demonstrate the high accuracy in describing the stress-strain relationship for tension. For stress relaxation, the error comparison confirms higher accuracy of FOM with the largest error within 3%, while the error of GKM and SLM up to 10%.

Originality/value

The paper confirms the viscous-elastic mechanical property of 3D printed photopolymer composites (Vero Yellow and Tango Black) for Stratasys PolyJet. As FOM shows high accuracy both in describing stress-strain and stress-time relation for tension and stress relaxation process, it can be directly used as a constitutive model to predict mechanical properties for engineering application.

Abstract

Purpose

The reaction dynamics of combustible clouds at high temperatures and pressures are a common form of energy output in aerospace and explosion accidents. The cloud explosion process is often affected by the external initial conditions. This study aims to numerically study the effects of airflow velocity, initial temperature and fuel concentration on the explosion behavior of isopropyl nitrate/air mixture in a semiconstrained combustor.

Design/methodology/approach

The discrete-phase model was adopted to consider the interaction between the gas-phase and droplet particles. A wave model was applied to the droplet breakup. A finite rate/eddy dissipation model was used to simulate the explosion process of the fuel cloud.

Findings

The peak pressure and temperature growth rate both decrease with the increasing initial temperature (1,000–2,200 K) of the combustor at a lower airflow velocity. The peak pressure increases with the increase of airflow velocity (50–100 m/s), whereas the peak temperature is not sensitive to the initial high temperature. The peak pressure of the two-phase explosion decreases with concentration (200–1,500 g/m3), whereas the peak temperature first increases and then decreases as the concentration increases.

Practical implications

Chain explosion reactions often occur under high-temperature, high-pressure and turbulent conditions. This study aims to provide prevention and data support for a gas–liquid two-phase explosion.

Originality/value

Sustained turbulence is realized by continuously injecting air and liquid fuel into a semiconfined high-temperature and high-pressure combustor to obtain the reaction dynamic parameters of a two-phase explosion.
